Walter Cronkite & the Big Bang
A quick sketch: Walter Cronkite was a part of my childhood, teen years, the voice of the news, the history of World War II, the moon landing, the sadness we all felt when John F. Kennedy died, the Vietnam War . . . but this is a particular broadcast that stands out in my mind. I was 16, so it was 1968. There was a lot of controversy at the moment about creationism and evolution which he reported on and then he did something unusual which I will never forget. He read from the book of Genesis ("And God said let there be light and there was light") and on the TV screen there was a depiction of the Big Bang and then the stars and planets and the universe forming. Just his voice: "And God said, let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life" and there was the cell splitting and amoeba and then a creature with legs moving out of the water and onto the earth and so on.
I will always be grateful to him for his insight and the courage to express it.

john travolta
I've been watching Michael Jackson dance for over a week now and it's been good, very good. But there's something about the way John Travolta dances that gets me every time. The best is "Chain of Fools" in the movie Michael but I couldn't find that one. This is an oddly affecting one, from Pulp Fiction. It's better if you have the watched the scene that comes right before it where Uma Thurman is trying unsuccessfully to seduce him, but it's still good.
